Orthodox monasteries in Croatia

Lepavina monastery was built around 1550, soon after the formation of the first Serbian settlements in the region.  In 1557, Turks attacked the monastery under the guidance of Arep-aga Alija, burned it, killed four monks and brought two of them into slavery.
Restoration of the monastery began in 1598 but moved slowly and difficult because of the lack of funding.
Arrival of Archimandrite Visarion in 1635, creates the conditions for the construction of the monastery in the true sense of the word. Under the direction of Archimandrite Visarion in 1636 Serbs began a fundamental construction of the monastery Lepavina and in 1642 the construction was done despite all the difficulties they encountered.
History of Lepavina monastery is inseparably linked with the history of Varazdin Generality Serbs. From the time of its reconstruction they intensely resisted all attempts for their conversion to catholicism and faught unition, but at the same time it meant fighting against turning local Serb Krajisnik people into bondservants. In defense of their religion and ethnic privilege (Statute Valahorum) the Monastery monks supported the people, fighting and dying alongside them.
In 1734, Serbs from Varazdin Generality succeeded to get their own Orthodox bishop, other than Uniate one.
In mid 18th  century, today's monastery church was built.

History of the Lepavina monastery is inextricably linked to the icon of the Holy Mother of Lepavina. The emergence of this icon is dating from the early 16th century and is the work of an unknown author. For a reason, this icon is attributed to the miraculous healing powers.
